Why Choose Magenta Pelleted Lettuce?

  • Colorful foliage: Red-tinged outer leaves and green hearts bring attractive contrast to fresh salads.
  • Distinctive head: Slightly puckered leaves form an appealing whorled, conical structure.
  • Crisp center: Green hearts provide refreshing texture and tender flavor.
  • Heat tolerance: Supports production in suitable warmer conditions, although excessive heat can still cause stress or bolting.
  • Open-pollinated variety: A traditional choice for gardeners interested in maintaining varieties with suitable seed-saving practices.
  • Visible pellets: Coating helps with individual placement during careful sowing.

Planting Tips for Success

  • Timing: Follow local lettuce planting calendars. Favor cooler conditions for establishment and protect crops during extreme heat.
  • Light: Grow in full sun in mild weather; afternoon shade can help during hot spells.
  • Soil: Prepare fertile, well-drained soil enriched with compost.
  • Sowing: Follow packet depth guidance, covering lightly. Keep pellets consistently moist during germination so their coating breaks down; do not let them dry out.
  • Spacing: Thin or transplant to give developing heads room and maintain airflow. Follow packet guidance for final spacing.
  • Water: Keep shallow root zones evenly moist without waterlogging.
  • Fertilizer: Use balanced vegetable fertilizer according to label directions and soil needs.
  • Support and care: No staking or trellising is needed. Weed gently and monitor for slugs, aphids, and leaf damage.
  • Harvest: Cut heads while leaves and hearts are crisp, before bolting. Refrigerate promptly.

Magenta Lettuce Salad with Pear, Walnuts, and Feta

Colorful crisp leaves balance juicy pear, toasted walnuts, and salty feta with a bright lemon dressing. Serves 4 as a side. Prep time: 20 minutes. No cooking required with ready-to-eat toasted walnuts.

Ingredients

  • 6 cups chopped harvested Magenta lettuce
  • 1 large ripe but firm pear, cored and thinly sliced
  • 1/3 cup ready-to-eat toasted walnuts, chopped
  • 1/3 cup crumbled feta made with pasteurized milk
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon honey or maple syrup, optional
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt, plus more to taste
  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper

Directions

  1. Separate lettuce leaves, discard damaged portions, rinse under running water, and spin or pat dry. Chop into bite-size pieces.
  2. Rinse pear before cutting. Core and slice just before assembling the salad.
  3. Whisk oil, lemon juice, mustard, optional sweetener, salt, and pepper.
  4. Toss lettuce and pear gently with enough dressing to lightly coat.
  5. Top with walnuts and feta and serve immediately, passing remaining dressing separately.

Options and Storage

Use apple instead of pear. Omit walnuts for a nut-free version, and omit feta for dairy-free preparation. Keep washed lettuce and dressing refrigerated separately until serving; add pear and toppings at the last moment. Refrigerate leftovers promptly. Do not leave prepared salad at room temperature longer than 2 hours, or 1 hour above 90°F.
