Fusion Purple Summer Crisp Pelleted Lettuce produces open heads of uniformly frilled, purple-tinged leaves with thick ribs, a sturdy core, and satisfying crunch. Its compact, slightly shorter habit distinguishes it from the original Fusion type. Heat tolerance and slow bolting support an extended harvest window under suitable conditions, while Tomato Bushy Stunt Virus resistance offers another useful trait. Bring a freshly harvested head to the cutting board, chop the colorful leaves, and toss with radishes and cucumber for a crisp garden salad. This open-pollinated variety reaches harvestable size in approximately 50 days under favorable conditions. Choose 60, 80, 100, or 200 pelleted seeds.

Germination Rate: 99%. Test Date: 4/26. JSS.

Texas Minimum Germination Rate: 80%

Pelleting coats each seed for easier visibility, handling, and precision spacing. Learn more about pelleted seeds.

Why Choose Fusion Purple Pelleted Lettuce?

  • Purple-tinged frills: Colorful, uniformly frilled leaves brighten salads and garden beds.
  • Open heads: Abundant leaves remain accessible for inspection and harvest.
  • Crisp texture: Thick ribs and substantial leaves add satisfying crunch.
  • Compact habit: Slightly shorter growth than original Fusion offers a distinctive garden form.
  • Heat tolerance and slow bolting: Useful traits for extending harvests where conditions allow.
  • Disease resistance: Listed resistance to Tomato Bushy Stunt Virus is helpful but does not guarantee immunity.
  • Precision-friendly pellets: Coating makes small seeds easier to place individually.

Planting Tips for Success

  • Season: Plan spring or fall crops using local temperatures and planting calendars. Heat tolerance does not make lettuce immune to hot-weather stress.
  • Light: Provide sun during cooler weather and consider afternoon shade in very hot conditions.
  • Soil: Use fertile, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter.
  • Sowing: Sow approximately 1/4 inch deep or follow packet guidance. Keep pellets consistently moist during germination so the coating breaks down.
  • Spacing: Follow packet guidance for intended harvest size and give full heads enough room for airflow rather than crowding.
  • Water: Maintain even moisture without waterlogging, especially during establishment.
  • Fertilizer: Apply balanced vegetable fertilizer according to label directions and soil needs.
  • Support and care: No trellis or staking is needed. Weed gently around shallow roots and monitor for pests.
  • Harvest: Begin checking around 50 days under favorable conditions. Cut useful-size heads or pick leaves before bolting; refrigerate promptly.

Nutritional Information

General harvested-lettuce information for a typical salad serving of approximately 2 cups chopped raw leaves, not a Fusion Purple-specific laboratory analysis.

  • Vitamin K: Lettuce contributes vitamin K to a varied diet.
  • Vitamin A: Leafy lettuce provides carotenoids that contribute vitamin A.
  • Folate: Harvested lettuce contributes folate along with its fresh texture.
  • Serving note: Nutrient amounts vary by growing conditions, leaf size, and preparation. Dressings and toppings change the finished dish's nutrition. This information applies to harvested lettuce, not planting seeds.

Important Disclosures

  • Variety Disclaimer: Color, head size, yield, texture, maturity, and disease response vary with growing conditions. Resistance does not mean immunity, and heat tolerance does not eliminate bolting.
  • Seed Storage: Store sealed, cool, dry, and dark. Protect pellets from moisture and handle gently.
  • Planting Zones: Lettuce is generally a cool-season crop. Follow local calendars and temperatures for planting dates.
  • For Planting: Seeds and coating are not food. Use harvested lettuce in recipes.

Fusion Purple Radish-Cucumber Crunch Salad

Colorful frilled lettuce, peppery radish, and cool cucumber meet a light lemon-yogurt dressing. Serves 4 as a side. Prep time: 20 minutes. No cooking required.

Ingredients

  • 6 cups chopped harvested Fusion Purple lettuce
  • 1 cup cucumber half-moons
  • 6 radishes, trimmed and thinly sliced
  • 1 medium carrot, shredded
  • 2 scallions, thinly sliced
  • 1/3 cup plain yogurt made with pasteurized milk
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon water, plus more if needed
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt, plus more to taste
  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper

Directions

  1. Discard damaged lettuce leaves. Rinse lettuce, cucumber, radishes, carrot, scallions, and lemon under running water before cutting. Dry lettuce thoroughly.
  2. Chop lettuce, slice cucumber and radishes, shred carrot, and thinly slice scallions.
  3. Whisk yogurt, oil, lemon juice, mustard, water, salt, and pepper. Add a little more water for a pourable dressing if needed.
  4. Combine lettuce and prepared vegetables in a large bowl. Toss gently with enough dressing to coat lightly.
  5. Serve immediately with remaining dressing alongside.

Options and Storage

For a dairy-free version, use plain unsweetened dairy-free yogurt. Replace scallions with thinly sliced red onion if desired. Refrigerate washed, dried lettuce, vegetables, and dressing separately until serving. Refrigerate leftovers promptly; dressed leaves soften. Do not leave prepared salad at room temperature longer than 2 hours, or 1 hour above 90°F.
