New Red Fire Loose-Leaf Lettuce Pelleted Seeds bring dramatic color and tender texture to your garden and salad bowl. Large, ruffled leaves have green bases that transition to deep red edges, creating an open, loose-leaf rosette rather than a tightly packed head. Mild, slightly sweet flavor makes this lettuce a colorful partner for fresh apples, garden vegetables, and light dressings. Harvest a few outer leaves for lunch while leaving the growing center intact for continued growth.

New Red Fire is valued for heat tolerance and bolt resistance, although prolonged heat can still cause bitterness and flowering. Pelleted seeds are easier to see and place precisely. Choose 60, 80, 100, or 200 seeds.

Germination Rate: 97%. Test Date: 10/25. JSS.

Texas Minimum Germination Rate: 80%

Why Choose New Red Fire Pelleted Lettuce?

  • Striking color: Green leaf bases and deep red ruffled edges add contrast to beds, containers, and fresh salads.
  • Tender eating quality: Mild, slightly sweet leaves complement a wide range of salad ingredients without overpowering them.
  • Flexible harvest: Pick outer leaves as needed while preserving the center, or harvest the entire loose rosette.
  • Heat and bolt tolerance: Useful growing traits can extend the harvest window, but cool conditions still produce the best lettuce quality.
  • Precise sowing: Larger, visible pellets make individual seed placement easier and help reduce unnecessary thinning.

Planting Tips for Success

  • Timing: Plant for spring or fall harvests. Use succession sowings to maintain a supply of fresh leaves.
  • Sunlight: Provide full sun in mild weather; afternoon shade can help during warmer periods.
  • Soil: Prepare fertile, well-drained soil with compost before planting.
  • Sowing: Sow shallowly, about 1/8–1/4 inch deep. Keep pellets evenly moist so the coating breaks down and seedlings establish.
  • Spacing: Allow approximately 10–12 inches between plants for full-size rosettes. Closer sowings may be used for young leaves, with thinning as plants develop.
  • Watering: Maintain consistent moisture without waterlogging. Do not let germinating pellets dry out.
  • Fertilizing: Apply a balanced vegetable fertilizer according to its label and your soil's needs.
  • Support and care: No staking or trellising is needed. Weed gently around shallow roots and check for aphids and slugs.
  • Harvest: Gather tender outer leaves without damaging the growing center, or cut the whole plant before bolting. Refrigerate promptly.

New Red Fire Apple-Walnut Salad

Ruffled red and green leaves make a colorful base for crisp apples and a tangy cider vinaigrette. Serves 4 as a side. Prep time: 15 minutes. No cooking required.

Ingredients

  • 6 cups harvested New Red Fire lettuce leaves, loosely packed
  • 1 crisp red-skinned apple, cored and thinly sliced
  • 1/3 cup chopped walnuts
  • 1/3 cup crumbled feta
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon honey, optional
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • 1/8 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

Directions

  1. Discard damaged lettuce leaves, rinse thoroughly under cool running water, and spin or pat dry. Tear large leaves into bite-size pieces.
  2. Whisk olive oil, cider vinegar, Dijon mustard, optional honey, salt, and pepper until combined.
  3. Place lettuce and apple slices in a large bowl. Drizzle with enough dressing to lightly coat and toss gently.
  4. Scatter walnuts and feta over the salad and serve immediately, passing any remaining dressing separately.

Options and Storage

Use sunflower kernels instead of walnuts for a nut-free variation, checking ingredient labels for your needs. Omit feta for a dairy-free salad. Keep washed lettuce and dressing refrigerated separately; slice the apple and assemble just before serving. Refrigerate leftovers promptly. Do not leave prepared salad out longer than 2 hours, or 1 hour above 90°F.
