Valerian brings fragrant pink or white flower clusters and perennial interest to the herb garden. Its upright growth adds height and texture to mixed plantings, while the flowers can draw visiting pollinators. Grow it for garden enjoyment and its history as a traditional herb, without treating a seed packet as a promise of health benefits. This packet contains 500 Non-GMO, heirloom seeds for planting.

Germination Rate: 65%. Test Date: 3/26. TLM.

Culinary Uses

None recommended in this listing. Valerian is not presented here as an everyday culinary herb, and this seed packet is for planting, not consumption.

Medicinal Uses

Valerian root has a history of traditional use in herbal preparations associated with relaxation and sleep. Historical use does not establish effectiveness or safety for an individual. This product is seed for planting, not a medicine, and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent disease. This listing does not provide instructions for making tinctures, capsules, or therapeutic teas. Consult a qualified healthcare professional before using valerian medicinally, especially if pregnant, nursing, taking medication, or managing a health condition.

Growing Directions

  • Sunlight: Choose full sun to partial shade, adjusting for your local heat and exposure.
  • Soil: Use fertile, well-drained soil enriched with compost.
  • Sowing: Follow packet directions for sowing depth and timing. Keep the seed-starting medium lightly and evenly moist during germination, without saturating it.
  • Transplanting: Harden off indoor-grown seedlings gradually before moving them outdoors when conditions are suitable.
  • Spacing: Allow approximately 18–24 inches between plants for growth and airflow, adjusting to your garden conditions.
  • Watering: Check moisture regularly during establishment and dry spells. Do not assume established plants will thrive without water.
  • Feeding: Use a light application of balanced fertilizer only as needed, following its label.
  • Support: Monitor tall stems in exposed sites and provide support if wind or heavy growth makes them lean.
  • Managing Seed: Remove spent flower heads before seed dispersal if you want to limit self-sowing. Check local guidance on suitability and spreading habits.
  • Seasonal Care: Winter survival and perennial performance depend on local climate, drainage, and exposure. Consult regional growing recommendations.

Simple Valerian Floral Arrangement

Bring a little garden beauty indoors with an airy vase of freshly cut Valerian flowers. This is a decorative project, not a food recipe or herbal preparation.

Makes: One small arrangement. Preparation: About 15 minutes.

Materials

  • 5–7 freshly cut Valerian flowering stems, adjusted to your vase size
  • A clean vase
  • Fresh water
  • Clean florist snips

Directions

  1. Harvest flowering stems with clean snips during the cooler part of the day, leaving plenty of growth on the plants.
  2. Fill a clean vase with fresh water. Remove leaves that would sit below the waterline.
  3. Trim stems to varied lengths and place taller stems near the center, with shorter stems around the edges.
  4. Leave space between the flower clusters for a loose, natural look.
  5. Display away from direct sun and heat. Change the water regularly, clean the vase, and remove fading stems.

Safety: Do not consume the flowers or vase water. Keep the arrangement away from children and pets, and wash hands after handling.
