Why Choose De Russie Summer Crisp Lettuce?
- Colorful Leaves: Bronzing and purplish-red speckles add visual interest to olive-green foliage.
- Crisp Texture: Refreshing leaves bring crunch to fresh salads and sandwiches.
- Flexible Harvests: Pick young outer leaves or allow more time for fuller plants.
- Summer Crisp Type: A useful addition to the lettuce garden, while even moisture and appropriate planting temperatures remain important.
- Heirloom and Open-Pollinated: Grow a traditional variety for your home vegetable garden.
Planting Tips for Success
- Timing: Sow in early spring or late summer to fall when temperatures suit lettuce. In hot regions, favor cooler-month plantings.
- Sunlight: Provide full sun in mild weather; afternoon shade can help as temperatures rise.
- Soil: Use fertile, well-drained soil amended with compost, with a pH around 6.0 to 7.0.
- Sowing: Sow about 1/8 inch deep and water gently. Keep the seedbed evenly moist. Seedlings can also be started indoors 3 to 4 weeks before transplanting.
- Spacing: Thin or transplant to approximately 8 to 12 inches apart for fuller plants.
- Watering: Maintain consistent moisture around the shallow roots without waterlogging the soil.
- Fertilizing: Incorporate compost before planting and use a vegetable fertilizer according to label directions if needed.
- Support: No trellis or staking is needed. Containers should drain freely and provide adequate growing room.
- Succession Sowing: Sow small batches every 2 to 3 weeks during suitable weather for a steadier supply.
- Pest and Disease Monitoring: Check for aphids, slugs, and leaf-chewing insects. Allow airflow and avoid prolonged leaf wetness; no specific disease-resistance guarantee is made here.
- Harvesting: Pick useful-size outer leaves gently, preserving the center, or harvest fuller plants at approximately 50 days. Heat and other stresses can still cause bolting or bitterness.

- Seed Storage: Keep unused seeds cool and dry, away from heat, moisture, and direct sunlight.
- Planting Zones: Lettuce is grown as a cool-season annual. Choose planting dates for local temperatures and frost conditions rather than relying on hardiness zone alone.
