Lettuce Butterhead Marvel of Four Seasons is a French heirloom with colorful rosettes of bronze, red, gold and green-toned leaves. Its tender texture and mild, buttery flavor make it a beautiful choice for fresh salads and garden-to-table meals. Harvest young leaves or allow plants to develop medium to large butterhead heads. The existing variety information lists approximately 40 days to harvest; timing and head development depend on growing conditions and harvest stage. Each packet contains 1,000 non-GMO, heirloom seeds.

Why Choose Marvel of Four Seasons Lettuce?

  • Colorful foliage: Bronze-red outer leaves and green tones bring visual interest to both the garden and salad bowl.
  • Tender butterhead texture: Mild leaves pair well with light dressings that do not overwhelm their delicate flavor.
  • Flexible harvest: Pick young leaves or grow plants into fuller heads, matching harvest stage to your needs.
  • French heirloom: Enjoy a traditional open-pollinated variety with a history in kitchen gardens.

Planting Tips for Success

  • Cool-season planting: Sow for spring or fall harvests according to local conditions. The name does not guarantee year-round performance; heat can cause bolting or poor germination.
  • Sowing: Sow shallowly, approximately 1/8 inch deep, in a fine seedbed. Keep the surface evenly moist while seeds germinate.
  • Sun and soil: Use fertile, well-drained soil. Full sun works well in cool weather; afternoon shade can help during warm spells.
  • Spacing: Thin plants approximately 8 to 12 inches apart for head development, or plant more closely for young-leaf harvests.
  • Watering: Maintain consistent moisture without saturating the roots. Mulch lightly around established plants to reduce drying.
  • Fertilizing: Incorporate compost and feed according to soil needs and fertilizer label directions.
  • Succession planting: Sow small batches every 2 to 3 weeks while conditions remain suitable for a steadier harvest.
  • Harvest: Cut clean leaves or whole heads during the cool part of the day. Rinse harvested lettuce and chill promptly for freshness.

Marvel of Four Seasons Garden Salad with Lemon-Dijon Dressing

Use harvested lettuce, not the planting seeds in this packet. Serves 4 as a side dish. Prep: 15 minutes. No cooking required.

Ingredients

  • 1 medium head Marvel of Four Seasons lettuce, about 6 loosely packed cups torn leaves
  • 1 small cucumber, thinly sliced into half moons
  • 1 cup cherry tomatoes, halved
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon honey, optional
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • Freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Directions

  1. Separate the lettuce leaves, rinse under running water and dry thoroughly in a salad spinner or with clean towels. Tear into bite-sized pieces.
  2. Place lettuce, washed cucumber and halved tomatoes in a large bowl.
  3. Whisk olive oil, lemon juice, Dijon, optional honey, salt and pepper until blended.
  4. Drizzle on enough dressing to lightly coat the leaves. Toss gently and serve immediately, offering any remaining dressing separately.

Options and storage: Omit honey or use maple syrup for a vegan dressing. Check mustard ingredients for allergens. Keep washed, dried lettuce refrigerated and store dressing separately; dressed leaves soften quickly. Refrigerate cut produce promptly and do not leave it at room temperature for more than 2 hours.
