Why Choose Tango Celery?
- Crisp stalks: Enjoy a refreshing crunch in salads, snack plates, and homemade slaws.
- Versatile flavor: Add savory celery flavor to stocks, soups, braises, and stuffing.
- Vigorous variety: Tango is valued for stress tolerance, without being immune to heat, drought, or inconsistent watering.
- Pelleted for easier handling: The coating makes tiny celery seeds easier to see and place.
- Open-pollinated: A useful choice for gardeners interested in seed saving, with appropriate isolation and management.
Planting Tips for Success
- Start early: Start indoors approximately 10 to 12 weeks before your planned transplant date. Adjust timing to local conditions; avoid exposing young plants to prolonged cold.
- Sow near the surface: Press pellets onto moist seed-starting mix, leaving them exposed or barely dusted with fine mix. Celery benefits from light during germination. Keep pellets consistently moist as the coating softens.
- Transplant carefully: Harden seedlings off gradually, then set approximately 8 to 12 inches apart in fertile, well-drained soil. Keep crowns at their original depth.
- Choose suitable light: Provide sun, with afternoon protection where intense heat stresses plants.
- Water steadily: Keep soil evenly moist without waterlogging. Mulch after establishment to help conserve moisture.
- Feed thoughtfully: Incorporate mature compost and fertilize according to a soil test and label directions. Avoid allowing plants to dry out between feedings.
- Support and harvest: Staking is generally unnecessary. Cut outer stalks as needed without damaging the central growing point, or harvest the whole plant at your preferred size.
What Are Pelleted Seeds?
Pelleted seeds have a coating that makes small seeds easier to handle and space. The coating must stay moist during germination; pelleting does not guarantee emergence. A coating described as NOP-compliant does not by itself establish that the seed is certified organic. Learn more about pelleted seeds.

Lemon-Garlic Braised Tango Celery
A savory side dish made with harvested Tango celery, not the contents of the seed packet. Serves 4. Prep: 15 minutes. Cook: 20 to 25 minutes.
Ingredients
- 1 pound harvested Tango celery stalks
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 3 garlic cloves, minced
- 3/4 cup vegetable broth
- 1 teaspoon finely grated lemon zest
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice, plus more to taste
- 1/4 teaspoon salt, adjusted for the broth
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 2 tablespoons chopped flat-leaf parsley
Directions
- Wash stalks thoroughly under running water, separating them to remove trapped soil. Trim ends, remove tough strings if needed, and cut stalks into approximately 3-inch lengths.
- Heat olive oil in a wide skillet over medium heat. Add celery and cook for 5 minutes, turning occasionally.
- Add garlic and cook for 30 seconds, stirring so it does not burn.
- Add broth, salt, and pepper. Bring to a gentle simmer, cover, and cook for 12 to 15 minutes, until celery is tender but holds its shape.
- Uncover and simmer for 2 to 4 minutes to reduce the liquid slightly. Add a splash of water if the pan dries before the celery is tender.
- Stir in lemon zest, lemon juice, and parsley. Taste, adjust seasoning, and serve warm with the pan juices.
Recipe Tips and Storage
Use similar-sized pieces for even cooking. Add chopped celery leaves sparingly for extra flavor. Refrigerate leftovers in a covered container within 2 hours, or within 1 hour when temperatures exceed 90°F. Use within 3 to 4 days and reheat leftovers to 165°F. This is a cooked side dish, not a tested canning recipe.
