Why Choose Swiss Chard Rainbow?
- Heirloom Seed: A traditional garden favorite for flavorful leafy harvests.
- Non-GMO: Seeds for gardeners seeking non-GMO vegetables.
- Colorful Stalks: Deep gold, white, red and magenta stems add interest to beds and meals.
- Dual-Stage Harvest: Pick tender baby leaves for salads or mature leaves and stalks for cooking.
- Repeat Harvests: Remove outer leaves while preserving the growing center to encourage continued production.
- Approachable Growing: Upright, self-supporting plants suit beginner and experienced gardeners.
Planting Tips for Success
- Timing: Direct sow 2 to 4 weeks before the last frost, or start indoors 4 to 6 weeks before transplanting. Sow again in late summer for fall harvests.
- Light: Grow in full sun to partial shade.
- Soil: Use rich, well-drained soil with a pH of 6.0 to 7.0. Incorporate compost before planting.
- Depth: Sow approximately 1/2 inch deep.
- Spacing: Thin to 6 to 8 inches for baby-leaf harvests or 12 to 18 inches for full-size plants.
- Water: Keep soil consistently moist. Established plants tolerate some dry conditions, but regular watering supports tender growth.
- Support: No staking is normally needed for these upright plants.
- Feeding: Use a fertilizer suited to leafy vegetables according to label directions. Side-dress as needed during repeated harvests, typically every 4 to 6 weeks.
- Harvest: Baby leaves may be ready in 25 to 30 days, with full-size harvests in approximately 50 to 60 days. Begin picking outer leaves when plants reach 6 to 8 inches, cutting near the base without damaging the center.

Garlic-Lemon Sautéed Rainbow Swiss Chard
A simple garden-to-table side made with harvested leaves and stalks, not the planting seeds in this packet. Serves 4. Preparation: 10 minutes. Cooking: 12 to 15 minutes.
Ingredients
- 1 large bunch harvested Rainbow Swiss chard, approximately 1 pound
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 3 garlic cloves, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons water, plus more if needed
- 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
- 1/4 teaspoon salt, or to taste
- 1/8 teaspoon black pepper
- Optional: a pinch of red pepper flakes and lemon wedges for serving
Directions
- Wash chard thoroughly under running water and drain. Separate the stalks from the leaves. Chop stalks into 1/2-inch pieces and slice leaves into wide ribbons.
- Warm olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add stalks and cook for 5 to 7 minutes, stirring, until beginning to soften.
- Add garlic and optional red pepper flakes. Stir for about 30 seconds without browning the garlic.
- Add leaves in batches, tossing as they wilt. Add water, cover and cook for 3 to 5 minutes, until stalks are tender and leaves are wilted. Add a splash more water if the skillet becomes dry.
- Uncover and cook briefly to evaporate excess liquid. Remove from heat, stir in lemon juice, salt and pepper, then serve warm with lemon wedges.
Serving and Storage: Serve alongside roasted chicken, fish, beans or grains. Refrigerate leftovers in a covered container within 2 hours and use within 3 to 4 days. Reheat thoroughly before serving.
