Celebrated for its uniquely tropical, intensely sweet flavor and distinctive aromatic perfume, Fruit Melon Charentais stands as the classic French melon variety that has delighted gardeners and gourmands for nearly a century. Originating from the Poitou-Charentes region of France, this prized heirloom features a smooth grey-green exterior with subtle ribbing, concealing deep salmon-orange flesh of exceptional sweetness and complexity. The intoxicating floral fragrance signals ripeness before the first slice — no other melon variety perfumes a room quite like Charentais. Small to medium fruits averaging 2–3 pounds mature in approximately 75–85 days and are best enjoyed fresh at peak ripeness.

Germination Rate: 85%. Test Date: 10/25. WILL.

Why Choose Charentais Melon?

  • The French Standard of Excellence: Considered by many chefs and food writers to be the finest-flavored melon in the world — the benchmark of melon perfection in French cuisine.
  • Exceptional Sweetness & Aroma: Deep salmon-orange flesh with an intensely sweet, floral, tropical flavor profile unlike any supermarket melon.
  • Distinctive Beauty: Smooth grey-green exterior with subtle ribbing — elegant in the garden and stunning on the table.
  • Compact Fruit Size: Small 2–3 lb fruits are ideal for single servings — no leftover half-melon in the fridge.
  • Heirloom & Open-Pollinated: Passed down for at least 75 years — save seeds year after year for a self-sustaining garden.
  • Non-GMO: DNA structure never altered from natural traditional breeding methods.

Planting Tips for Success

  • Sunlight: Full sun — at least 8 hours per day. Charentais demands maximum warmth and light to develop its signature sweetness.
  • Soil: Rich, well-drained soil with a pH of 6.0–6.8. Work in generous compost before planting. Melons are heavy feeders.
  • Planting: Start indoors 3–4 weeks before last frost date. Transplant outdoors after all frost risk has passed and soil temps reach 70°F+. Direct sow is possible in warm climates.
  • Spacing: Space hills 4–6 feet apart with 2–3 plants per hill, or space transplants 18–24 inches apart in rows 5–6 feet apart.
  • Watering: Water deeply and consistently during vine growth and fruit set. Reduce watering significantly as fruits approach maturity — this concentrates sugars and improves flavor.
  • Fertilizing: Apply a balanced fertilizer at planting. Once vines begin to run, switch to a phosphorus and potassium-rich formula to support fruit development and sweetness.
  • Support: For vertical growing, support individual fruits in slings made from netting or pantyhose. On the ground, place a tile or board under each fruit to prevent rot.
  • Harvesting: Ready in 75–85 days. Ripe Charentais slips cleanly from the vine with slight pressure and emits a strong floral fragrance. The blossom end will soften slightly. Do not refrigerate until cut — cold temperatures mute the aroma.
