Why Choose German Giant Radish Seeds?

  • Extra-large roots: Round roots offer substantial slices and wedges for vegetable platters and roasting.
  • Mild, crisp flavor: Enjoy crunchy white flesh fresh from a cool-season garden.
  • Harvest flexibility: This variety can hold quality longer than many small radishes, though regular checks are still important.
  • Quick harvest: Begin checking roots in about 30 days under favorable conditions.
  • Heirloom and open-pollinated: Save seed from properly isolated flowering plants to maintain the variety.

Planting Tips for Success

  • Season: Direct sow during cool spring or fall weather, following local planting dates.
  • Soil: Prepare loose, well-drained soil free of stones and hard clods. Mix in finished compost before planting.
  • Sowing: Plant about 1/2 inch deep in rows about 12 inches apart. Direct sow rather than transplanting to avoid disturbing developing roots.
  • Spacing: Thin established seedlings to about 4–6 inches apart to allow larger roots to develop.
  • Water: Keep soil evenly moist without waterlogging. Irregular watering can contribute to cracking and poor texture.
  • Fertilizing: Avoid excessive nitrogen, which encourages leafy growth at the expense of roots.
  • Support and protection: No staking is needed. Weed gently and use insect netting if flea beetles are a problem.
  • Successions and harvest: Sow small batches every 2–3 weeks during cool weather. Check roots regularly, harvesting before they become tough, cracked, or pithy.

Cooking Methods

  • Raw: Slice harvested roots into salads or cut into wedges for a crisp vegetable platter.
  • Roasted: Quarter large roots and roast with olive oil and herbs to mellow their peppery flavor.
  • Sautéed: Cook evenly sized pieces in butter or oil until tender-crisp.
  • Quick-pickled: Thin slices make a crunchy refrigerated topping. Use a tested recipe and keep refrigerated; this is not shelf-stable canning guidance.
  • Soups and braises: Add chunks to savory dishes where they can soften and absorb the broth.

Garlic-Herb Roasted German Giant Radishes

Use harvested German Giant radish roots for this mellow, savory side dish, not the planting seeds in the packet. Serves 4. Prep: 10 minutes. Cook: 25–35 minutes.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound harvested German Giant radishes, washed and trimmed
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 garlic cloves, finely minced
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice

Directions

  1. Heat the oven to 425°F. Wash radishes under running water, trim off tops and root tails, and cut into evenly sized quarters or wedges about 1 inch thick. Pat dry.
  2. Toss with olive oil, salt, and pepper. Spread in a single layer on a rimmed baking sheet, leaving space between pieces.
  3. Roast for 20 minutes, then turn. Toss with the garlic and roast another 5–15 minutes, until fork-tender and lightly browned. Timing depends on wedge size.
  4. Transfer to a serving bowl and toss with parsley and lemon juice. Serve warm.

Options: Add a pinch of dried thyme before roasting, or finish with a small pat of butter. Serve alongside roasted chicken, beans, or a grain bowl.

Storage: Refrigerate leftovers in a covered container within 2 hours. Use within 3–4 days and reheat until steaming hot.
