Bring crisp texture and bright color to your cool-season garden with Radish Champion. This non-GMO heirloom produces round, deep-red roots with white flesh and a mild, peppery bite. Enjoy them sliced fresh, tucked into sandwiches, or roasted for a mellow side dish. Listed maturity is approximately 25–30 days under suitable conditions, making successive sowings practical for regular harvests. Pick promptly for best texture, since heat, moisture stress, and delayed harvest can still cause pithiness. This packet contains 1000 seeds.

Germination Rate: 80%. Test Date: 11/25. WILL.

Texas Minimum Germination Rate: 75%

Why Choose Champion Radish?

  • Colorful Roots: Deep-red skin and crisp white interiors brighten salads and vegetable platters.
  • Quick Harvest: Approximately 25–30-day maturity supports repeated cool-season sowings.
  • Versatile Flavor: Enjoy a fresh peppery bite raw or a gentler flavor after roasting.
  • Small-Space Friendly: Grow in beds or suitable containers with loose soil and good drainage.
  • Heirloom and Non-GMO: Grow a traditional open-pollinated variety; seed saving requires appropriate isolation and allowing selected plants to flower and mature seed.

Planting Tips for Success

  • Timing: Direct sow during cool spring or fall weather. Use local temperatures and frost dates rather than a fixed calendar for your region.
  • Planting Depth: Sow approximately 1/2 inch deep. Direct sowing avoids disturbing developing roots.
  • Spacing: Thin seedlings to approximately 2–3 inches apart so roots have room to develop.
  • Sunlight: Provide at least 6 hours of direct sun where possible.
  • Soil: Choose loose, well-drained soil. Remove stones and break up clods before sowing.
  • Watering: Keep moisture even without waterlogging; drying and rewetting can affect root quality.
  • Fertilizing: Follow soil-test guidance and avoid excess nitrogen, which can encourage foliage at the expense of roots.
  • Succession Sowing: Sow small batches every 1–2 weeks while weather remains suitable.
  • Harvest: Begin checking around 25 days, when roots are approximately 1 inch across. Harvest promptly rather than waiting for oversized roots.

Roasted Champion Radishes with Parsley

Use harvested Champion radish roots, not planting seeds. Makes 4 side-dish servings. Prep: 10 minutes. Roast: 20–25 minutes. Total: 30–35 minutes.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound Champion radishes
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley

Directions

  1. Heat oven to 425°F. Line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper rated for that temperature.
  2. Trim greens and fine root tips. Scrub radishes under running water and dry well. Halve small roots; quarter larger ones for similarly sized pieces.
  3. Toss with olive oil, salt, and black pepper. Arrange in a single layer with cut sides down.
  4. Roast 20–25 minutes, turning once, until tender and lightly golden on the cut faces. Timing varies with size.
  5. Transfer to a serving dish and toss with lemon juice and parsley. Serve warm.

Storage and Safety

Refrigerate leftovers in a shallow covered container within 2 hours, or 1 hour above 90°F. Keep at 40°F or below and use within 3–4 days. Reheat leftovers to 165°F.
