Grow a classic warm-season crop with Cowhorn Okra, a vigorous, non-GMO heirloom with tall plants and long, slender, medium-green ribbed pods. Plants can reach 6 to 8 feet tall, and pods may grow up to 10 inches long. For the kitchen, harvest young pods around 3 to 5 inches long rather than waiting for their maximum size. This packet contains 100 seeds.

Germination Rate: 85%. Test Date: On File. WILL.

Texas Minimum Germination Rate: 50%

Why Choose Cowhorn Okra?

  • Long-podded heirloom: Grow a traditional open-pollinated variety with distinctive slender, ribbed green pods.
  • Heat-loving growth: Cowhorn is a useful choice for a sunny vegetable garden with a long, warm growing season.
  • Tall, vigorous plants: Allow room for plants that can reach 6 to 8 feet, and plan easy access for frequent picking.
  • Versatile harvest: Young pods work well in fried okra, grilled sides, roasted vegetables, and hearty stews.
  • Continued picking: Harvest frequently while pods are tender to encourage ongoing production.

Planting Tips for Success

  • Timing: Direct sow after frost danger has passed and the soil is thoroughly warm. Cold soil can delay emergence and increase the risk of seed decay.
  • Sunlight: Choose full sun with at least 6 to 8 hours of direct light daily.
  • Soil and depth: Use fertile, well-draining soil, ideally around pH 6.0 to 7.0. Sow approximately 1 inch deep and keep the seedbed evenly moist, not waterlogged.
  • Spacing: Thin plants to 18 to 24 inches apart, with rows 3 to 4 feet apart for access and airflow.
  • Seed preparation: Follow the packet directions for any recommended pretreatment. Do not assume scarification is required for every okra seed lot.
  • Watering: Water deeply as needed, especially during flowering and pod development. Mulch after the soil warms to help conserve moisture.
  • Fertilizing: Base fertilizer applications on a soil test when possible. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can encourage leafy growth at the expense of pods.
  • Support: Stake tall plants if needed in exposed or windy gardens.
  • Harvesting: Check plants frequently and pick pods young, usually around 3 to 5 inches long. Wear gloves and long sleeves if the plants irritate your skin, and use clean snips rather than pulling pods off.
  • Late-season growth: Cutting back tall plants can encourage new shoots where enough warm weather remains. A second crop depends on local conditions and the time available before frost; it is not guaranteed.

Important Disclosures

  • Variety Disclaimer: Plant height, pod size, yield, tenderness, and harvest timing vary with climate, soil, weather, and gardening practices. Maximum pod length is not a recommendation to delay harvest.
  • Seed Storage: Keep planting seeds cool, dry, and protected from sunlight and moisture. Viability changes with storage conditions and age.
  • Planting Zones: Okra is a frost-sensitive, warm-season crop. Local frost dates, soil temperature, and growing-season length are more useful planting guides than hardiness zone alone.
